Old Plastic Glue

Last updated on 14 years ago

I've got an old 1/32 model of a 40 Ford Sedan from one of the many swap meets. Looks like it was put together by a kid. Unpainted and glue all over the place.

I was able to disassemble it. Probably not a real good welding type glue.

I've heard that there is something that may dissolve old glue. There are spots where the glue has eaten into the plastic so I know there's not much I can do about that, but there are lots of places where the plastic would be okay if I can get the old glue off.

Anybody heard or know of a way?

I'd call Steve, the plastics guy, at Al's.

Sorry to say, to the best of my knowledge there is no miracle fix for your problem, but your kit is yery rare soooooo????? If you want to spend the time, first sand off the glue with some 400 grit wet or dry sandpaper (3M),do this dry, then follow with some 600 grit paper ,do this wet .You may have to score the old body lines and details with a hobby knife. You can fill the pits left by the old glue with some super glue .Again sand the areas with the same procedure. You can repeat this step until all the pitting is gone, BE CARFULL NOT TO DAMAGE THE BODY DETAILS.Wash the body with dish soap(this removes any oils that may be on the plastic) . Prime the body (Tamiya 80742,works well for me) sand lightly with 1000 grit paper (wet) wash and your'e ready for paint. Over the years I've restored many, many vintage kits this is what works best for me.

Yeah, and I payed hardly anything for it. :) It's amazing what can be found but you need to look for what others consider junk. This kit provided the "original" parts for the resin casts that provided the headlights and bumpers for another 40 Ford Sedan in great condition (now that it has bumpers and headlights). I'll look to put a picture in Member's Rides.

Thanks for the tips. If it doesn't come out as good as I like, maybe I'll just make a dirt track stock car out of it.

I think what you might be refering to is called DE-BONDER, this will only work on C.A type glues and only if kicker was not used, but I am 99.999999999999999999999 sure it will eat the plastic your trying to save. If you realy need or want this car to be what it could be, Twister is the guy for that stuff. I have seen him turn a rag top into a hard top and if you did not look inside you would never know it was not stock.
Thanks Voodoo (Frank)

Thanks Frank. I have super glue de-bonder. Anybody, like me, (love / hate C.A. glue) who tends to stick their fingers together needs to have this stuff handy. :o Not really what I'm looking for.

Many moons ago on a Slot Car Email reflector, I (think I) recall something about dissolving model glue. That along with lots of other valuable tips like how to remove paint and tampo printing and Future Floor wax, etc. Just thought I'd post the question here to start some dialogue and, hopefully, get an answer.

I'm sure Twister could do a fine job and I appreciate his advice, but I ain't sharing the fun! ;)

Also, I uploaded two pictures of my already restored and converted 1940 Ford 2 Door Sedan slot car. Watch for an administrator to put it in Member's Rides.
