Well were at it again, this time with a 12 hour bad boy. I think we need about four 4 man teams to pull this off; also we need four team captains. So in total we need 16 guys and the more the better. The date that open right now is the 28th of June and we could go into July. The weather should be warm enough by then with warm nights, why the warm nights? Because we will be racing under the pavilion as we did for the picnic so when it gets dark, we race in the dark and yes that means the cars will need lights. The cars will be handed out so you won’t need a car for this race but you can paint them as you like. It will be held on the new club track. The campground pool will be open as well as all the other stuff. You’re welcome to camp the weekend if you like, I think it’s about $4.00 a night for a tent, and yes there are showers too. So when you’re not racing sleep, fish, play. This is a bring your own food and drink event. More to follow.
My thoughts on teams would be to put all confirmed participants into a hat and pull four names. Those randomly chosen "captains" then choose remaining confirmed participants in a closed session, "playground style", allowing the teams to even themselves out based on the captains' assessments of the racing talent available. This should eliminate any ranking assumptions, disagreements, or general unrest with the method of choosing teams and seems relatively fair. Kind of a true "draft" (not draught for you beer drinkers out there, or draft for you NASCAR super speedway fanatics either).
Sounds like an interesting idea for a race so far.
What are the possibilities being considerd for these "handout" cars?
Ok we have 20 guys that say they want this race to happen, there is about 4 more that are getting back to me. The date so far is 07/12/08 in Shorewood IL. I have called and they are checking that the pavilion is open for use that day.
We've been down this road many times over the years but still seem to have the same problem. We have this kick-ass website that lots of guys put a lot of effort into, and nobody uses it? I know there are people that don't look at their computers for days at a time, and there are some of us who sit in front of one all day long. Just from looking at this site, one guy responded to this thread, 8 or 9 guys answered the pole, but now we have 20 guys that are interested? Some of us rely on this site as our means of communication with the club, and some of us talk on the phone daily. It would be very helpful if some of what gets discussed on the phone could make it on to this site so the rest of us know whats going on. I'm a bit more in the loop than some, but less so than others, so I generally have an idea what's what, but if two or three guys who use this site only, pass on an event because it doesn't look like anybody is interested, I think we're letting those guys down.
Neal's right. I didn't realize that was the weekend of the NASCAR race, which means I would not be able to make it either since we are ticket holders that have attended since the inaugural season.
Don't change it again due to me . . . unless it's really an issue for more members?
Road America Vintage races are 17-20 July weekend. Best views of REAL race cars too ...up close and personal. F-1 Ferraris in thunder valley...beer and corn and brats...oh my!
Also same weekend as Mid-America's next big race on the flat track in Montgomery,IL.
